Learning the Art of Eye Contact through Laughter Yoga
An important teaching of Laughter Yoga is learning the art of eye contact. Our eyes play an important role in communication and are a measure of our self-confidence.
In Laughter Yoga, we use eye contact as a tool to make laughter more contagious and genuine. We found that over a period of time, Laughter Club members developed the art of looking into the eyes of other people in a precise way. For instance, if the eye contact is very brief, it will not connect you to the other person and if it is too long, it might get overwhelming. Therefore, it is important to know the correct way of eye contact in order to communicate effectively. Though there is no hard and fast rule to this; it is mostly learnt by experience.
Researchers have also found that children and adults who avoid or are denied eye contact are more likely to suffer from depression and feelings of isolation as well as exhibit antisocial traits such as callousness. It is only actual eye contact that fully activates those parts of the brain that allow us to more acutely and accurately process another person’s feelings and intentions.
